BS EN 15746-1:2010+A1:2011 is a European standard that sets out the technical requirements for self-propelled road-rail machines and associated equipment used in railway applications. The standard aims to minimize the specific hazards that can arise during the commissioning, operation, and maintenance of these machines.

Part 1 of the standard defines the requirements for the approval of the machine by an authorized body, while Part 2 defines the requirements for the machine to be declared conformant by the manufacturer. It should be noted that machines classified under Annex 4 of the Machinery Directive require a conformity check in conjunction with a notified body.

The standard also considers additional requirements for machines running on narrow gauge or broad gauge lines, tramways, railways utilizing non-adhesion between the rail and rail wheels, and underground infrastructures. It is applicable to machines and associated equipment that are partly supported on the ballast or the formation.

However, the standard does not cover requirements for the quality of work or the performance of the machine. Specific requirements established by the machine operator for the use of machines are subject to negotiation between the manufacturer and the infrastructure manager. The standard also does not apply to separate machines temporarily mounted on machines and associated equipment, demountable machines, trailers, or road-rail trailers.

Additionally, the standard does not establish additional requirements for operation subject to special rules, hazards due to natural causes, working methods, operation in severe working conditions, hazards due to errors in software, or hazards occurring when handling suspended loads that may swing freely.

It is important to note that this standard only applies to machines ordered one year after the publication date by CEN (European Committee for Standardization) of this European Standard. Other track construction and maintenance machines used on railway tracks are covered in other European Standards as outlined in Annex G of the standard.
