The BS EN 15746-2:2020 standard focuses on the significant hazards, hazardous situations, and events associated with self-propelled road-rail machines and their associated equipment when adapted for use on railway and urban rail networks.

The standard addresses hazards related to construction, maintenance, and inspection of railway infrastructure, as well as shunting and emergency rescue vehicles. It covers a wide range of activities such as assembly, installation, commissioning, operation, fault finding, maintenance, and decommissioning of the machines.

The document also highlights specific machine functions, including excavation, ballast handling, track construction and maintenance, lifting, overhead contact line system maintenance, infrastructure component maintenance and inspection, working in tunnels, vegetation control, and emergency rescue and recovery.

It is important to note that the standard does not deal with exceptional circumstances, requirements related to the quality of work and machine performance, machines that utilize the contact line system for traction, specific requirements set by railway infrastructure or urban rail managers, negotiations between the manufacturer and the machine operator for additional requirements, use and travel of the machine on public highways, hazards caused by passing high-speed trains, extreme environmental conditions, highly corrosive or contaminating environments, or potentially explosive atmospheres.
