Railway Applications - Track - Road Rail Machines and Associated Equipment - Part 1: Technical Requirements for Travelling and Working
Also Known As:
The DIN EN 15746-1 standard addresses the technical requirements for road-rail machines and associated equipment used in railway applications. The standard aims to mitigate the risks and hazards associated with the commissioning, operation, and maintenance of these machines.
The standard applies to self-propelled road-rail machines and associated equipment, regardless of the track gauge. However, additional requirements may apply to machines operating on narrow gauge or broad gauge lines, railways with non-adhesion between the rail and rail wheels, and underground infrastructures. Machines and associated equipment, which are partly supported on the ballast or the formation, are covered by this standard.
The document does not cover quality requirements or performance specifications for the machines. Instead, it focuses on addressing common risks and hazards associated with railway operations. Specific requirements for machine use, such as those established by the machine operator, are negotiated between the manufacturer and the infrastructure manager.
The standard excludes requirements for machines not running and working on rails, separate machines temporarily mounted on other machines, demountable machines, trailers (including road-rail trailers), and vehicles with track-guided attachments. Urban rail machines are covered in Part 4 of the standard series, with additional requirements specified.
Additionally, the standard does not establish requirements for operation subject to special rules, hazards due to natural causes, working methods, operation in severe working conditions, hazards due to software errors, or hazards associated with handling suspended loads. If a road-rail machine is used, it is assumed that the host vehicle meets the safety standards for its basic functions before conversion.
It is worth noting that this standard does not address other track construction and maintenance machines used on railway tracks, as these are covered in separate European Standards.
