Also Known As:
The CAN/CSA-S472-04 (R2009) standard is part of a series of standards that form the Code for the design, construction, and installation of offshore structures. This is the third edition of the standard, replacing previous editions published in 1992 and 1989.
The scope of the standard addresses the geotechnical engineering aspects of various types of offshore structures, including gravity-base structures, fill structures, fill-retention structures, and pile-supported structures. It covers site investigations, general design principles, the influences of soil and natural processes on the foundation components, and geotechnical factors that affect the construction, installation, operation, and decommissioning of such structures.
It is important to note that the standard does not address ice as a resistive structural element. The standard specifies that all investigations, analysis, design activities, construction activities, inspections, and monitoring activities related to foundations should be performed by or under the supervision of competent persons who have demonstrated relevant experience and are professionally licensed in Canada as engineers, geologists, or geophysicists.
The standard also provides guidelines on the use of mandatory language, with "shall" indicating a requirement, "should" indicating a recommendation, "may" indicating an option, and "can" indicating possibility or capability. Notes accompanying clauses are for explanatory or informative purposes and do not include requirements. Annexes are designated as normative or informative, defining their application.
