CSA A23.3:19 is the seventh edition of the standard. It is intended to be used in conjunction with other CSA standards for designing concrete structures for buildings. This edition supersedes previous editions and includes several updates and changes.

Some of the updates in this edition include updated definitions, additional information on cover for fire resistance, updates to clauses on flexural ductility and shear design, the addition of a new clause on punching shear, updates to the clause on walls, and the addition of a new clause on structural diaphragms. Clause 21 has also been updated, and Annex D is now a mandatory part of the standard.

The scope of this standard specifies requirements for the design and strength evaluation of reinforced and prestressed concrete structures, as well as plain concrete elements. It notes that for certain structures such as blast-resistant structures, tanks, swimming pools, etc., additional requirements from applicable codes, standards, or guidelines should be considered. Special requirements for parking structures are specified in CSA S413.

Fire resistance requirements are also addressed in this standard, requiring designs to comply with the fire resistance requirements of the applicable building code. Information on the fire resistance of concrete elements can be found in Appendix D of the National Building Code of Canada.

The standard also allows for alternative design procedures that are not covered by the standard but provide an equivalent level of safety and performance. These alternative procedures can be carried out through analysis based on established theory, evaluation of a full-scale structure or prototype by a loading test, or studies of model analogues.

Design requirements for shells and folded plates are specified in Annex E, and terminology related to the standard is defined in section 1.5. This standard has been developed in compliance with the requirements of the Standards Council of Canada and has been published as a National Standard of Canada by CSA Group.
