BS EN 12697-4:2015 is a European standard that provides a test method for the recovery of soluble bitumen from bituminous mixtures. The purpose of this test is to obtain bitumen in a form that is suitable for further testing. It is particularly suitable for recovering paving grade bitumen, but it can also be used for mixtures that contain volatile matter such as cut-back bitumen, although the precision of the results may be reduced.

This standard is considered the reference method for recovering mixtures with volatile matter, while the use of a rotary evaporator procedure (as described in EN 12697-3) is recommended for mixtures containing paving grade bitumen. It should be noted, however, that the recovery of polymer-modified bitumen has limited experience and may not be applicable in all cases.
