Area Measurement for Healthcare Facilities
Also Known As:
The CAN/CSA Z317.11-17 standard establishes requirements and guidelines for measuring floor areas in healthcare facilities (HCFs) in Canada. The standard aims to provide a uniform system for area measurement that supports various healthcare facility planning and design activities, such as functional programming, building and room design, cost estimating, and funding of capital programs. It also facilitates meaningful comparisons between healthcare facilities across the country.
The third edition of this standard (superseding the previous editions published in 2002 and 1982) introduces several changes and updates. These include aligning terms and definitions with CSA Z8000, adding definitions and requirements for various types of spaces, such as interstitial space and mechanical space, providing general requirements for scoping and planning area measurement activities, and offering guidance on the measurement of non-component gross or building gross spaces.
The scope of the standard encompasses both existing healthcare buildings and new construction. However, when applying the measurement techniques to alterations and renovations of existing buildings, users are advised to exercise judgment in defining the limits of areas measured and relating area measurements to the cost of the work. It's important to note that the standard does not address measurements directly related to compliance with jurisdictional codes and regulations, as building code definitions would apply in those cases.
