Damage Prevention for the Protection of Underground Infrastructure
Also Known As:
The CAN/CSA-Z247-15 (R2020) standard is a set of guidelines aimed at preventing damage to underground infrastructure. The standard applies to various types of underground infrastructure, including oil and gas pipelines, electrical and telecommunication cables, and water and sewer lines.
The standard addresses ground disturbance activities in proximity to existing, deactivated, abandoned in-place, or reserved for future use underground infrastructure. It outlines the key elements of the damage prevention process that, when consistently followed, will help prevent and reduce damage to underground infrastructure and enhance public safety.
It is important to note that the standard does not apply to above-grade infrastructure or infrastructure installed below grade for private use on private land where the landowner is both the excavator and the infrastructure owner. However, the standard may still provide valuable guidance to these exempted users.
This edition of the standard has been developed in compliance with the Standards Council of Canada requirements and has been published as a National Standard of Canada by the CSA Group. Additional and site-specific requirements may be specified by federal, provincial/territorial, or municipal authorities, and this standard should not replace any regulatory or permitting requirements imposed by applicable statutes.
