The BS EN 124-2:2015 standard describes the requirements for gully tops and manhole tops made of cast iron. These products are used to cover gullies, manholes, and inspection chambers in areas that are subjected to both pedestrian and vehicular traffic. The standard applies to gully tops and manhole tops with a clear opening up to and including 1,000mm.

The standard provides classifications for different types of applications based on the level of traffic load they can withstand. These classifications range from pedestrian and pedal cyclist areas (class A 15) to areas with particularly high wheel loads, such as aircraft pavements (class F 900). The standard also specifies that the cast iron covers or gratings must be used in combination with frames according to other relevant standards.

However, the standard does not cover certain types of installations, such as cover fillings installed on-site, concave gratings for specific load classes, and gratings/covers as part of prefabricated drainage channels. It also excludes floor and roof gullies in buildings, which are covered by a separate standard (EN 12353), as well as surface boxes.
