The BS EN 124-1:2015 standard is related to gully tops and manhole tops used in pedestrian and vehicular areas. It covers products with a clear opening up to and including 1,000 mm for covering gullies, manholes, and inspection chambers. The standard defines the classification, general design principles, performance requirements, and test methods for gully tops and manhole tops made of various materials.
The standard is divided into different parts depending on the material used - EN 124-2 for cast iron, EN 124-3 for steel or aluminium alloys, EN 124-4 for steel reinforced concrete, EN 124-5 for composite materials, and EN 124-6 for polypropylene, polyethylene, or unplasticized poly(vinyl chloride). Part 1 of the standard is applicable in combination with at least one of these specific material standards, as each material has its own set of requirements.
However, the standard does not apply to gratings or covers used in prefabricated drainage channels according to EN 1433, floor and roof gullies in buildings specified in EN 1253, and surface boxes. These are outside the scope of BS EN 124-1:2015.
